Andong in Gyeongsangbuk-do is said to be the representative city embodying the historical site charm and unique traditions of Korea, with well-preserved cultural heritage. For this reason, the city attracts thousands of tourists every year, eager to learn and experience what life was like in the past.
Andong is called “the spiritual capital of Korea” because it has preserved its traditions so well. Queen Elizabeth II also visited Andong in 1999, highlighting the cultural importance of the city in Korea.

Popular food in Andong
*Andong-Gangodeungeo (salted grilled mackerel)
Due to its geographical location, Andong is far from the seaside and thus lacks sources of fresh seafood. Consequently, ingredients had to be preserved, mainly by salting, to prevent fish from spoiling. Ironically, godeungeo (mackerel in Korean) became perfectly seasoned and matured during the journey to Andong. People began to look forward to the tasty salted mackerel when it arrived at the Andong Market.
